We currently offer three big band sections, two jazz combo sections, online jazz history, and a jazz improvisation course.

Audition requirements (10min)
- Scales: Play a minimum of 3 major scales major and minor scales. Play common jazz related modes (e.g., Dorian, Bebop, blues scale, melodic minor, etc) at a moderate tempo.
- Sight-reading: Be ready to sight read a short jazz excerpt (melody and solis).
- Prepared piece: Prepare a short jazz solo (standard) that demonstrates your technical proficiency and improvisational skills. A speaker will be provided for backing tracks if needed.
- Band placement results will be posted and emailed on August 15th.
Minimum Experience Level
The Irvine Valley College Jazz Band is looking for motivated musicians with at least 1 or more years of experience playing jazz. This experience can include participation in high school jazz bands, community ensembles, or private lessons focused on jazz improvisation.
College credit is available for high school & middle school students upon enrollment in the class.
Big bands - Combos (MUS 46)
- Monday 4-6:30 PM: This is the Concert Jazz Band. This is the more advanced ensemble focusing on rehearsing and performing a wide variety of jazz styles.
- Monday 7-9:30 PM: The Studio Jazz Band delves deep into the fundamentals of jazz and improvisation, fostering a strong foundation for aspiring jazz musicians. This ensemble caters to intermediate players seeking to refine their craft.
- Tuesday 7-9:30 PM: Jazz Combos focus on advanced improvisation, deep stylistic understanding, and developing a varied repertoire. Designed for beginners, intermediate to advanced players seeking an intensive, intimate musical environment.
- Wednesday 4-6:30 PM: Jazz Improvisation (MUS 75): This class delves deeply into the concepts and mechanics of jazz improvisation. Students will explore theory, scale/chord relationships, and practical application over standard forms, building confidence in soloing.
- Thursday 4-6:30 PM: The Lab Band - This ensemble focuses on standard big band repertoire, developing sight-reading, ensemble blend, and introductory improvisation. Ideal for musicians gaining foundational big band experience.
*Jazz ensemble classes are also offered as community sections which are free upon enrollment. Priority for enrollment is strictly reserved for enrolled IVC students and local high school/middle school students who are earning grades and college credit.
